LATEST UPDATE MIGRATION NEWS IN 2024
Starting 01 July 2024, the Australian Government introduced substantial changes to immigration policies affecting several visa programs and conditions. These updates will impact business sponsors, skilled migration, and temporary visa holders.
Ending onshore student visa hopping
A range of measures affecting international students have already come into effect this year. Now, the government is tightening restrictions on who can apply for Student visas while in Australia.
Holders of these visas will no longer be allowed to apply Student visa applications (subclass 500) from within Australia:
- Temporary Graduate (subclass 485)
- Visitor (subclass 600)
- Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
- Medical Treatment (subclass 602)
- eVisitor (subclass 651)
- Maritime Crew (subclass 988)
Pre-visa application (ballot)
Since 1 July 2024, Pre-visa application (ballot) is in place for Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). Passport holders from Vietnam, China and India will first have to apply for one of a limited number of places via a ballot — which comes with a $25 price tag.
Due to a high volume of interest for these countries, programs are temporarily paused, and will open when the new pre-visa application (ballot) arrangements are finalised later in the year.
